When I decided about two weeks ago to prepare this material to do a film review I contemplated the idea of sitting down and writing a short chronicle talking about the film, as well as the book "THE NAME OF THE ROSE" that I read in the early 80's when I was still living in Brazil and I met the fantastic work of Umberto Eco, an Italian author already very prestigious about a detective story with a lot of historical knowledge that took place in an Abbey of Monjes Beneditinos in 1327. The book was more than a work of knowledge , it was exciting to each page that more and more made me penetrate a period that I did not know. I was 16 years old at the time.
The film came later ... in 1986 and I remember watching it very happy even though I knew that such a complex work would not be able to be completely adapted in 2 hours. Even so this film did not disappoint me and to a large extent the credit is that of Sean Connery who played William Von Baskerville. In a very disciplined and elegant performance I could not help but notice that Sean Connery brought to the character the soul of the film itself simply because he was perfect in this role. The film was a success in Brazil that was on show for more than 6 months, I believe in the world as well. But not in the USA.
I thought a lot if I would do a review of this film or not, always trying to be careful with the material because after all I liked the book much more. But with the advent of the death of actor Sean Connery the tribute for my modest part seemed more than appropriate and this film is not much remembered when we talk about the actor and his best roles. "The Name of the Rose" rarely appears on the critics' lists as a great performance, which I completely disagree with. So I prepared this video with great care and dedicate it to the fans of this actor who leaves a fantastic legacy of exciting films with his presence always discreet, charming and worthy of another myth of cinema. Thanks for the regards Mr. Sean Connery.
